Portugal

REVIRA Technologies is developing advanced mattress dismantling and material detection solutions to transform post-consumer waste into high-quality, traceable raw materials. Designed to support Europe’s transition to a circular economy, REVIRA enables recyclers and manufacturers to meet new regulatory demands by recovering valuable materials from discarded mattresses. By addressing landfill overuse and feedstock shortages, REVIRA contributes to emission reduction, resource efficiency, and the creation of a scalable recycling infrastructure aligned with Digital Product Passport requirements.

REVIRA employs several key circular strategies:

  • Smart dismantling technology for precision separation.
  • Advanced material detection systems for quality assurance.
  • Cloud-based traceability infrastructure for full lifecycle tracking.
  • Integration with EPR schemes to close material loops.
  • Support for digital product passports, aligning with EU compliance requirements.

Expected impact

1. Significant reduction in landfill use and associated emissions. By diverting mattress waste from disposal and recovering valuable materials, REVIRA aims to reduce landfill dependency and cut CO₂ emissions at scale, potentially avoiding more than 450,000 tons of waste and 71,000 tons of CO₂e annually in Portugal alone.

2. Creation of new circular value chains and local economic opportunities. The project is expected to stimulate a new market for high-quality recycled feedstock, generating jobs and enabling circular innovation across the textile and furniture sectors, while supporting regional competitiveness and resource efficiency.

3. Development of scalable recycling infrastructure to serve multiple industries. With plans to establish its first dismantling and detection facility and expand into new verticals such as automotive interiors and furniture recycling, REVIRA aims to build a replicable infrastructure capable of transforming post-consumer waste into traceable raw materials at national and European levels.

EU Circular Economy Classification

  • 1.a
Design and production of products and assets that enable circular economy strategies through e.g. (i) increased resource efficiency, durability, functionality, modularity, upgradability, easy disassembly and repair; (ii) use of materials that are reusable, recyclable or compostable.
  • 2.a
Reuse, repair, refurbishing, repurposing and remanufacturing of end-of-life or redundant products, movable assets and their components that would otherwise be discarded
  • 2.d
Rehabilitation of degraded land to return to useful state and remediation of abandoned or underutilised brownfield sites in preparation for redevelopment
  • 3.a
Separate collection and reverse logistics of wastes as well as redundant products, parts and materials enabling circular value retention and recovery strategies
